Fortunately for the budget treasure hunter, you probably won't need much more then a basic model of metal detector to get started. It's helpful if your metal detector has a "discrimination mode", which is a way for the detector to indicate to you (through different types of beeps) what sort of metal it may have found. You'll appreciate this when it saves you from the effort of digging up another bottle cap!
